Prints look tired and the machine is old — is it the drum, the toner, or time to replace the copier?
Work through it in order before spending anything big. If output is simply pale and a fresh toner cartridge restores it, it was toner. What does a worn drum actually look like on the page?
Three signatures, mainly. Repeating marks: the same dot or streak returning at regular intervals down the sheet. And worn patches: the same pale band in the same position on every page. Even, overall fading across the whole page is usually toner running low instead — the pattern, not the paleness, is what gives a drum away.

At 800 pages a month it is roughly two and a half years, and even at 1,500 pages a month you are looking at well over a year. Treat the drum surface as the delicate part it is. Keep the unit in its protective bag until the moment you fit it, never touch the drum's surface with your fingers, and keep it out of direct light while it is out of the machine — light and fingerprints are the two things that shorten a drum's life before it prints a page. Fit it in one go rather than leaving the machine open, and note the date or the meter reading when you install it, so the next diagnosis starts from a known point.
